4th December Okay, cop out time. Again. Will have to use a species I’ve written about in the main list. Jut another god awful day. One of those days where it feels like the sun hasn’t bothered to come over the horizon. I’ve looked out the window forlornly at the garden and barely seen aContinue reading “Advent Species No.4”

Advent Species Day 1
A little different and a chance to motivate myself to write every day again. I came across a website which gave out a challenge of recording a species every day in the advent period (1st December – 25th December) which would then enter you into a prize draw if you managed it. Unfortunately I don’tContinue reading “Advent Species Day 1”
63. Treecreeper
Been a while! As England is now in lockdown (again) I thought it would be a good idea to continue with my blog. I will try and write every day again. Got the advantage of no work to do (my contract for my Ecologist job ran out 3 – 4 weeks ago), so got someContinue reading “63. Treecreeper”
58. Yellowhammer
“A little bit of bread but no cheese” is what a Yellowhammer does not say no matter how many bird books tell me otherwise. The phrase makes no sense, who eats bread on the assumption that cheese automatically comes with it? And so much so that they feel the need to add the stipulation thatContinue reading “58. Yellowhammer”
54. Swift
My mojo is definitely leaving this blog! Alas the gaps between posts are getting wider. No idea why exactly. I do write a lot for work now, admittedly very controlled, templated, and dry texts so nothing like this, which is basically words from my head written directly to here (which is probably why these lookContinue reading “54. Swift”
Lockdown Bird List: A geeky interlude
Bit of a departure for this post. I’ve been seeing a lot of wildlife in the time since my last post, mostly out my window, but once from a site visit for work (couldn’t be done from home). But instead of picking a species (I will do in subsequent posts) I’ll list my bird sightingsContinue reading “Lockdown Bird List: A geeky interlude”
50. (Barn) Swallow
Spring can now officially begin. The swallows (or a swallow) have arrived in my part of the world. Whilst a single swallow doesn’t make a summer it sure makes a spring! It was an odd trip out for my daily exercise walk; certain abuses of the privilege around the country could curtail any such activityContinue reading “50. (Barn) Swallow”
48. Tystie (Black Guillemot)
Something different again, I’ve gone into my records to see what I saw at this time of year in other years. Being stuck at home (now with the beginnings of a cold and stomach cramp type symptoms, really sucks!) has made me think about other times, better times maybe. I had a great varied careerContinue reading “48. Tystie (Black Guillemot)”
46. Chiffchaff
So. Farewell then. Freedom for now, at least most of it. I doubt I can be able to go to my new birding spot, I went twice, it was good, i’ll be back when the crisis dies down. So I’ll have to stick to my local nature reserve and my garden, I’ve chosen the formerContinue reading “46. Chiffchaff”
44. Oystercatcher
Today I visited a new site which I’ve only recently been told about. It’s a flooded farmer’s field about 2 miles from my house. It reminded me of several purpose built nature reserves. It’s mostly a ‘lake’ and can be easily observed from the side of the road, and it is teeming with bird life.Continue reading “44. Oystercatcher”
